Meet our new faculty members!

Photos of Dr. Chan, Dr. Fromille, and Dr. Wong

Now that we are a few weeks into spring semester, it's a great time to meet our newest faculty members! They are doing incredible work in research and teaching and are great resources to connect geography and atmospheric science to a variety of other disciplines.

After receiving his PhD from Penn State University, Dr. Chan comes to our department from a postdoctoral fellowship in Colorado where he worked on novel methods to improve weather forecasts through satellite imagery for the National Center for Atmospheric Research. He is currently working on research in ensemble data assimilation and tropical weather. His research has been published in Weather, Monthly Weather Review, Advances in Atmospheric Science, and Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems. In his work here at Ohio State, he is working with students on developing their understanding of weather and learning how to program. Dr. Chan currently teaches Atmospheric Science 2940 - Basic Meteorology. He is a cat person and enjoys flower gardening and spending time at Franklin Park Conservatory. You can find out more about his work at https://geography.osu.edu/people/chan.1063

Dr. Fromille comes to our department from the University of California - Santa Cruz. Her doctoral work in sociology connected community-based research with the leaders and youth of a Baltimore out-of-school program to the intersection of international travel, education, and African Diaspora studies. Her research and teaching is fundamentally interdisciplinary, connecting ideas from across the sciences and humanities. Her research has been published in Social Sciences, Youth & Society, Hypatia, The Black Scholar, and Sociological Perspectives. In her work here at Ohio State, she looks forward to continuing to develop community-engaged research in new contexts. Dr. Fromille currently teaches Geography 3701 - The Making of the Modern World and Geography 5401 - Economies, Society and Space. Dr. Wong, an MA graduate from the Geography department, is returning to Ohio State after receiving her PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and was an Assistant Professor of Geography at Florida State. Her research focuses on highlighting people on the margins - those often overlooked and those whose voices are not heard enough. This includes research on the effect of climate change on people with disabilities (1 in 5 Americans) and older adults in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her research has been published in the U.S. Annals of the American Association of Geographers (AAG), Social Science & Medicine, The Milbank Quarterly, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication. Dr. Wong currently teaches Geography 3702 - Life and Death Geographies and Geography 5402 - Land Use Geography. She is enjoying reconnecting with the Columbus community, living only a couple of blocks away from where she lived in graduate school.
